HTV Small Re-entry Capsule (HSRC)

Small re-entry capsule to return payloads from ISS.

Aiming for both practical use for sample return from the ISS including basic technological demonstration of a re-entry vehicle, JAXA has been developing the HTV Small Re-entry Capsule (HSRC) since 2014.

After being subjected to a technical demonstration test and recovered off the coast of Minami-Tori-shima island, Japan, the HTV Small Re-entry Capsule (HSRC) was presented to journalists at JAXA Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC) on November 27, 2018.

On November 11, 2018, after the capsule re-entered the atmosphere, the lift guiding operation was started at 06:42 (JST). Its parachute was deployed at 06:50 at an altitude of about 15 km and the capsule splashed down to the sea at 07:04. The required acceleration during the lift-guided flight was initially set at less than 4 G, and an evaluation showed that the actual acceleration was 3.5 G.

JAXA is conducting research on adding a retrieval function to the space station transfer vehicle "Kounotori" (HTV).
The HTV with recovery function (HTV-R) aims to achieve the following two goals by maximizing the use and development of KOUNOTORI.

SLIM

The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is gearing up to send the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM, mission to the moon on an H-2A rocket in August 2023.

SLIM is, as its acronym suggests, a small-scale moon mission, but it has bigger ambitions in mind. The main aim of the lander — which is 2.4 meters high, 2.7 m wide and 1.7 m deep — is to demonstrate accurate lunar landing techniques, which will help make more challenging landing areas more accessible.

SLIM will weigh 590 kilograms at launch, with roughly two-thirds of this mass being fuel. The spacecraft is equipped with a landing radar for its descent onto the lunar surface and will use image matching navigation and obstacle detection. The impact of landing will be absorbed using a crushable aluminum foam base. 

Microgravity Science

JAXA Protein Crystal Growth on the International Space Station.

Since the beginning of utilization of Russian service module, 30 space experiments were performed until 2018. Due to the long experience and technological consideration as well as verification and improvement of sampling situations and optimization of crystallization solution on th ground, many higher-quality crystals than on the ground had been acquired.

Of those of which the structures were unknown at the beginning of the collaborative research with JAXA, 11 structures were determined. Also complex structure of proteins with compounds were figured out for the first time in more than 20 structures. Moreover, data collection of 12 kinds of samples was performed for the first time in the space experiment.

Lunar Farming Concept Study (June 2019)

This working group carries out studies which are aimed at constructing a cultivation system for crops (lunar farms) that would supply energy and nutrients necessary for mankind to live without relying on supplies from Earth, assuming our explorative, short-term, and long-term stays on the moon and Mars.
