The Moonhouse

The Moonhouse is art in space. It is arguably the first site specific art on the moon, possibly in all of deep space. It is a red house with white corners, like the ones typical to the nordic countries, and it will be built on the moon. The Moonhouse makes art of the moon for everyone to be inspired by.

The Moonhouse is a spectacular story of a 25-year-long artistic ambition with the goal of placing a red house with white trim on the surface of the moon. Soon it will be in place.

The Moonhouse, the first house on the moon, could be an expression of humanity’s ability to achieve the seemingly unattainable through boundary-crossing thoughts and collaborations and maybe a symbol of humanity’s eternal and collective striving; a perspective on existence and a eye towards Earth.

By placing something as simple and down-to-earth as a red house in a place as remote, inhospitable and colourless as the moon, Mikael Genberg questions our perception of what is possible and meaningful in the cosmos. Moreover, The Moonhouse carries a poetic undertone. It reminds us of our roots and our home on Earth while symbolizing our dreams and ambitions to explore and expand beyond our known boundaries.

The Moonhouse, the size of a big hand, will hitch a ride to the moon on a lunar lander operated by the Japanese company ispace.

• The house is made out of aluminum and daubed with a special, space-certified paint. It’s 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) long, 8 cms (3.1 inches) wide and 10 cms (3.9 inches) tall.
• While it was Genberg’s idea to put the house on the moon with the help of lunar rover Tenacious, about 70 people donated some 7 million - 10 million Swedish kronor ($620,000 - $888,000) for the project, which also includes the flight, he said.
