MUSES - Multi-User System for Earth Sensing

Earth-observation platform that will be installed on the exterior of the International Space Station and support up to four remote sensing instruments, or other payloads, simultaneously.

MUSES is the Multi-User System for Earth Sensing. MUSES is a Teledyne space platform on board the ISS that represents a faster, more cost effective way to have operational instruments in space. On June 3, 2017, MUSES was installed on the International Space Station and shortly thereafter declared fully operational. MUSES is a first of its kind commercial space imaging mission that supports up to four (4) in-flight robotically installed sensors, one of which is DESIS. DESIS and other sensors to come are operated from the Teledyne Brown Engineering Huntsville operation center.

MUSES provides inertial stability and precision pointing capabilities which are vital for imaging payloads, laser communications payloads, and other instrumentation that requires looking at a point on the earth. Muses has an onboard server to store the data prior to downlink to the Huntsville Operations Center. The data are downlinked through the ISS high-rate data transmission link to the ground. The onboard server can also provide an opportunity for onboard processing for fast turnaround of processing results.​ ​​'

The MUSES platform can accommodate hosted payloads for a few weeks to a few years. Since the ISS is human operated, experimental instruments can be adjusted on board in a way free flyers cannot. These instruments can be imaging sensors, laser communications, or other sensing equipment that can fit into the MUSES large and space containers.

The MUSES Platform is mounted on EXPRESS Logistics Carrier 4 (ELC-4) on the starboard-nadir side of the ISS truss. The MUSES pointing accuracy is better than 30 arc seconds, which corresponds to about 60 m on the ground at the nominal ISS altitude of 400 km. The MUSES Master Time provided to hosted payloads has an accuracy of <±250 μsec sec to GPS time. Geo-location is sourced from the ISS GPS system and is accurate to ±50 m.
